Alyssa Monks might make photorealist paintings but she’s equally interested in abstraction. Monks’ paintings explore the tension between abstraction and realism, using different filters to visually distort and disintegrate the body. In this shallow painted space, the subject is pushing against our real space. Strokes of thick paint in delicate color relationships are pushed and pulled to imitate glass, steam, water and flesh.

“When I began painting the human body, I was obsessed with it and needed to create as much realism as possible. I chased realism until it began to unravel and deconstruct itself,” Alyssa states, “Realism and Abstraction are in a symbiotic relationship – they need each other to exist and eventually become the same.” -Alyssa Monks

Here everyone aspires to become a living god. Nothing less. In the dark training rooms or on the beaches of the Dakar suburbs, where youngsters train themselves to Senegalese wrestling, everyone awaits feverishly the moment when they will have to wrestle under the burning sun, within the sand arena, in the middle of a stadium that gathers tens of thousands hungry spectators.
In order to give them the strength to face their sparring partner, the marabou will coat the wrestlers' bodies with a potion; he will pour milk on their torsos, their shoulders, their heads, he will start singing the ritual words to cast evil spells away. The amulets they wear will protect them. Then, they will have to strike their opponents. Should one put his weight on his two legs and two arms, lie down on his back or fall out of the circle, then he will be defeated, or even worse, humiliated. Should one come out of the arena as a winner and the overexcited audience will acclaim him king. They might even become champions, wealthy and almost divine some day.

Denis Rouvre has photographed the strong bodies, the tense, perpetually defiant faces of the wrestling apprentices of suburbs of Dakar. They belong to one of the 77 stables of the country and they daily practice this unique sport activity as a subtle mix of traditional wrestling and bare hands boxing. The urbanization movement in the 70's brought into the cities these traditional fights which were organized among the villages after harvest time. Wrestling became professional and included "boxing". Punching was added to body contact. Fees that can be counted in millions of CFA Francs come now in addition to the sport and mystical challenge of the fight.

In the hidden training rooms of the streets of Dakar, they come every night with this dream in their minds and ready to take a lot of beating. They, who live on small jobs and tinker with their existence, are burning to strive against their sociological and human conditions. They want to become famous and superhuman. The names of their actual and past idols sound like those of gladiators: Tyson, Bomber, The Slaughterer, The Tiger of Fass, Pikine Hurricane. For this particular round that may change their lives, the wrestlers are ready to fight to death. The look in their eyes tells that they are lions already and that they will leap at the throat of those who will stand on the arena's sand.

Enormous Cows Made from Recycled Car Parts

The education section of Helsinki-based sculptor Miina Äkkijyrkkä’s CV is very telling, it reads: 1965-1966 Equine College Ypäjä; 1967-1968 Dairy Farming School of North-Savo; 1969-1973 The School of the Fine Arts of Finland. Meaning that for the better part of nearly 50 years Äkkijyrkkä has been working with cows, both in their care and using them as a muse in her lengthy career as an artist. Indeed, a section of her website reads “Models” and links to a gallery of nothing but cows. Her sculptures are immense. She purchases dozens of used vehicles from dealers around Finland and uses the colorful scraps to form these towering bovines that at times look coincidentally like an At At from Star Wars. Although a completely different artform, this symbiosis of cow and human reminded me of Miru Kim (nsfw) who famously photographs herself nude with pigs; the photos are really quite stunning. One of their members, Miha Arnak, shot over his newly launched portfolio which included this interior design work that ZEK did for 3fs. I really enjoy the correlation of computer keys and rooms, but the Pong whiteboard is definitely my favorite. See many more shots of the interior here.

This project began from the theory that humans are made of cosmic matter as a result of a stars death. I created imagery that showcased this cosmic birth through the use of dust and reflective confetti to create galaxies. The models organic bodily expressions as they are frozen in time between the particles suggest their celestial creation. In addition, space and time is heightened by the use of three-dimensional animated gifs. Their movement serves as a visual metaphor to the spatial link we share with stars as well as their separateness through time.

David S. Allee was born in New York City in 1969 and is a former urban planner. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1991, and his MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2001, where he studied with Joel Sternfeld, Robert Polidori, and Vera Lutter. His photographs have been exhibited widely in museums and galleries, including solo exhibitions at the Morgan Lehman Gallery in Chelsea in 2006, Princeton University in 2005 and the Knoxville Museum of Art in 2004. His work has also been included in group shows at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. His photographs have appeared widely in publications and journals and were recently featured in the book City Art, with essays by Adam Gopnik and Eleanor Heartney. Mr. Allee’s photographs are in the collection of major institutions, such as the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Library of Congress, the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art as well as numerous private collections. Mr. Allee lives and works in New York City.

In February of 2011, just after completing the massive MODA Murals in Vancouver, I shot over to SF to drop in my contribution for the Indoor Mural Project at Justin’s massive gallery space. I wanted to drop in a piece that reflected my dustier approach to my constructive direction, relative to a piece I would execute outside of a studio space. I incorporated hand styles, line work and my traditional rusted/ distresses finishings. It was even lovelier to have the lady at foot documenting the session on her old trusty Yashica, shot in 120 film.

What gives you inspiration?

Wandering and discovering new places; landscapes and spaces so  embedded in everyday life, yet they offer up clues and hints of  something deeper, something more poetic. 

What are your influences?

A lot of the usual – the New Topographers, Stephen Shore. Alec  Soth. But also a lot of the fantastic younger photographers I see  wandering around the confines of Flickr and Tumblr – Daniel Shea, Peter Baker,  Lukasz Biederman. I try to limit the amount of time I spend looking at  other peoples work on Flickr, but its just too tempting….

What does photography mean to you?

Being in the world, understanding it. I’m also a big believer in  saying less with my images – I love how photography can ask more  questions than it answers. For me its about what you leave out, the  possibility of what lies outside its edges.

After a period spent as a recordist assistant inside a record company, he graduated from Accademia di Comunicazione di Milano in art direction. His professional experience in the world of advertising became significant in 2001 when he was promoted as creative director. He writes about the Arts, teaches Advertising at various significant academic institutions, and collaborates with the Triennale Museum of Milan in the role of art director. Viktor Hertz combines two of his greatest hobbies, graphic design and film, into a clever series starring pictograms! Often seen on signs or instruction manuals, pictograms serve as our universal language, a way for all of us to quickly figure out where we're going or what we're (not) allowed to do. To him, this set became Hertz's "form of expression," a way to stretch his creativity and imagination.

"I’ve always been fascinated and a bit obsessed by pictograms, with the way they are as simple as possible. A classmate called me a 'pictophile' the other day. I can only agree. I made a few Kubrick posters some time ago, using pictograms, so that’s where it all started. Now I wanted to be consistent, and do a series of posters using the same grid and style, making them work together as a whole.

I try to bring a twist to it, and not get too simple. I want to be unpredictable and entertaining, and make something that communicates the film instantly, yet in an original way."

Para começar você precisa de :

- Texturas, que podem ser fotos feitas por você mesmo, em boa qualidade. Pode procurar por aí, no seu quintal, na rua, um piso de concreto, um muro, uma parede velha e rachada, areia, pintura, etc. Você vai encontrar boas texturas em todo lugar. è inclusive um bom exercício para treinar o olho, procurando padrões, curvas, sujeiras, rachaduras, etc, que podem deixar uma foto mais bonita.

- Photoshop e um conhecimento básico de layers.

- Uma foto que talvez fique melhor com a textura. Elas não funcionam com todas as fotos, portanto tente achar um motivo, e uma boa foto, para usá-las, se é que isso existe. Lembre que as texturas não vão melhorar uma foto ruim.

Na imagem abaixo está descrito o processo. O básico é colocar a textura em um layer, acima da foto, e mexer nos blend modes, eu sempre usava muito o Overlay, SofLight, Multiply. Após ajustar o blend mode, regule a opacidade dele para ajustar a intensidade do efeito.

Obs.

- Se as texturas tiverem cor, isso afetará as fotos. Você pode tirar proveito disso, ou tirar completamente a cor das texturas com o comando desaturate (MENU >> Image >> Adjusdments >> Desaturate).

- Para dar um tom de cor geral na foto, crie um layer vazio (MENU >> Layer >> New layer) e pinte com uma cor sólida, depois use os blends e a opacidade para ajustar o efeito. Para vizualizar a janela dos layers vá em (MENU >> Window >> Layers) ou F7

- Você pode apagar partes do layer onde a textura está, evitando assim situações onde a textura fica exagerada em cima dos rostos, pele, etc, das pessoas na foto.

For his series Mirrors, Dallas-based photographer Tom Hussey paired images of elderly subjects with reflections of the “younger versions” of themselves. The results were so impressive that they were used in an award-winning ad campaign for an Alzheimer’s drug.

“I was talking with a World War II veteran, Gardner, about his life experiences,” says Hussey, explaining the genesis of the project.

“He was about to have his 80th birthday. He commented that he didn’t understand how he could be 80 years old as he felt he was still a young man. He just didn’t feel it was possible he could be 80 years old. I started thinking about a milestone age approaching for me, as I was nearing 40. I realized that everyone thinks of themselves at a certain age or time in life. I built a bathroom set and photographed Gardner staring into his bathroom mirror and seeing himself as a 25-year-old young man.”
